What autonomous should mean — the operator-controlled ladder

"Autonomous" is doing a lot of unexamined work in industrial AI marketing. Taken literally, it suggests software acting on production equipment without human judgment — which is exactly what no responsible operator wants on day one.

We think autonomy should mean a ladder, not a switch. Deployments begin recommend-only: the system detects, diagnoses, and proposes, and people decide. The next rung is approval-gated action. The top rung — autonomous execution for well-understood cases — is reached at the operator's pace, and every step of every action is written to an audit log either way.

The ladder is not a compromise on the way to "real" autonomy; it is what autonomy should mean in facilities where mistakes are expensive. This article makes the case, describes how the autonomy level is set per action class, and explains why the audit trail is as important as the action.
